Understanding consumer credit
Where it stands today
Consumer credit was $5.20 trillion at the end of August 2026.
What does consumer credit include?
Consumer credit is the credit extended to households for goods and services, outside loans secured by real estate such as mortgages and home equity lines. The Federal Reserve Board publishes it each month in its G.19 release: revolving credit, mostly credit card balances, and nonrevolving credit, such as loans for cars, education, boats and vacations, held by banks, finance companies, credit unions, the federal government and others.

The totals are seasonally adjusted; the growth rate is the month's change at an annual rate, as the Board publishes it. Student and car loans are published for the end of each quarter, not seasonally adjusted. The interest rates come from a survey of commercial banks in the middle month of each quarter: the credit card rate on accounts assessed interest leaves out accounts whose balance is paid in full.
What 500metrics adds: the change from a year earlier and each calendar year's change from the December before, worked out from the published months.

What do these figures leave out, and how are they cited?Limits, dates and how to cite
What this number cannot tell you
- The Board publishes amounts in millions of dollars and revises earlier months as lenders report; this page shows them as published now.
- Consumer credit leaves out mortgages and other loans secured by real estate.
- The interest rates are averages from a survey of commercial banks only; other lenders' rates are not in them.
- The holders are the Board's not seasonally adjusted levels; the shares are ours, each rounded to one decimal, so they may not add to exactly 100 per cent.
